Family & Inn History

The Schlunegger family has a history of creating grand style in everything they do at the Inn of the Hills - a legendary Kerrville, Texas landmark. “Our first priority is to take care of the people—guests and employees,” emphasized Hans, whose father was an Innkeeper in Elgg, Switzerland. “Hospitality is part of my European ancestry,” he said, recalling the family living quarters above the Elgg Gasthaus.

In 1950, Hans enrolled in a cook’s apprenticeship in Basel, Switzerland. After graduation, he worked as a chef at several famous hotels in Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland. In 1956, he met his future wife Annemarie Odermatt at Belvoir Park, a prestigious culinary arts college in Zurich where they studied hotel management together.

After she graduated, Annemarie went to work for Han’s parents at the Gasthaus in Elgg. Hans laughs remembering, “My parents never saw much of me until Annemarie started working for them.”
